A radiopharmaceutical, such as FDG (fluorodeoxyglucose), which includes both sugar (glucose) and a radionuclide (a radioactive element) that gives off signals, is injected into the patient and its emissions are measured by a PET/CT scanner. This tracer is a glucose analog that is taken up by glucose-using cells. PET scan would highlight a tumor's increased glucose consumption, while a CT scan would reveal its physical mass.
PET/CT can help refine cancer findings, alter treatment plans, and sometimes help patients avoid unnecessary surgeries. Oncology PET and PET/CT are used to diagnose, stage and restage (determine extent of), cancer as well as to evaluate the patient’s response to therapy.
